Wonderfully evocative album utilizing the folk melodies of Siberian Shamen.

A few years ago on a trip to the visit and play music with some of indigenous peoples of Siberia Nigel Shaw (of Global and Riven) was given a large pile of Russian LPs. These turned out to be the Soviet equivalent of the US 'Folkways' series, the archiving of rapidly vanishing folk music. Some of the material on the LPs dated back to the 1930's.

So, inspired by the strange, magical music of the Chukchi, Inuit, Ulchi, Nivho, Saami and other peoples Nigel decided to record an album developing some of the musical themes and marrying some of the actual recordings to a more modern and western setting. The result is this rather special album.

The atmosphere of the original, mainly vocal chants is sensitively explored using Nigel's long-time wind instrument and keyboard/synth expertise. The ambience and deep power of humans interacting with what must often have been the harsh, but often magical realities of living in an extreme Northern climate is beautifully captured. It is a perfect marriage between organic instrumentation and modern technology.

Gentle grooving beats are introduced on some of the tracks. And Nigel is more than ably supported by Carolyn Hillier's vocals, (she also provides some additional lyrics), Brian Zero on guitar/gliss guitar and Shaun Farrenden on Didgeridu, all of whom are members of Global/Riven. Adrian Utley guitarist with Portishead also makes telling appearances on several tracks.

The CD has nice 16 page booklet with liner note such as:

4. The Whispering of Stars - Introduced by traditional breathing rhythms from the Sakha people, this simple Inuit song celebrates the beauty of the land. The Whispering of Stars is a description of the sound of ice crystals falling to the ground as the out-breath leaves the body.

Intigued? Well it's all such great, rewarding stuff. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Nigel is donating £1.00 for every CD sold to Survival International for their work supporting the rights of the indigenous tribal people in the Siberian Arctic. To date this has been over £1000.
