IAO FestivalIΔO Festival - Explorations psychédéliques en France, 1968
concerts: Fri 28th | Sat 29th | Sun 30th Nov 2008
exhibition: Fri 28th Nov 2008 through Sun 8th Mar 2009

CAPC - musée d'art Contemporain de Bordeaux - Rue Ferrère, 33000 Bordeaux, France - [map]

Three month exhibition of all things French and psychedelic opens Friday 28th with three consecutive days/nights of concerts. Focusing on the beginnings in 1968, the key, 'strong 'n' steamin' role daevid, Gilli and the birthing Gong played in the development will be represented by rare posters, artifacts and images - and, as the photograph seems to indicate, in vibrational inspiration.

Details on their IΔO Festival page, and http://radiognomevisible.blogspot.com.

Friday 28th features Tim Blake with the group Turzi.

Saturday 29th includes Kevin Ayers with The Telescopes.

One day and three day tickets available online from FNAC.

Gong at the Vieille Grille Theatre, Paris, 1968Gong's earliest recording?

2009 celebrates Gong's 40th anniversary - as measured from their first 'proper' gig at the Amougies Festival in 1969. Certainly that was the first gig where they were primarily billed as Gong and where they first publicly performed group compositions. However the concept 'Gong' pre-dates that, as shown on this early 1968 handbill.

What more appropriate way to get the download section of the Planet Gong Kasbah moving and at the same mark the opening of the Bordeaux exhibition than with making available the earliest known live recording of 'Gong' - an excellent six and a half minutes from early 1968.

Perhaps Gong were more of a 'happening' back then than the band into which they were destined to coalesce. Truly nothing seems to be definitive with this strange ensemble.

Beginning with daevid's and Harry Williamson's 22 Meanings (unavailable for ages on disc), and daevid's Seven Drones (also available as a CD), the new download section gradually expands with rare recordings, posters and even video from the Gong Family archives… items such as the Flying Teapot Spotters Scroll

byg Gong and daevid allen on BYG Records

An hard-core illustrated record collecting article full of detail unearthed and pieced together by co-authors Steve Gay and Jonny Greene - so many more releases than expected. Ah, those black plastic discs in cardboard overcoats…

Gong 2009
After splendidly uplifting Gong concerts in London in June with Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy on board, and where new material was premiered, plans are being hatched for the coming year… the 40th of this delightfully adventurous and decidedly odd family may prove to be a remarkable one indeed - hang on to your heads.

daevid allen - Gong Dreaming 2 (book)

Four times the size of 'Gong Dreaming 1' and ten times as surprising and improbable. The tale of daevid allen reaches the Gong…

The wait is almost over… However, as there would be a premium price to pay if the book went to the printers before Christmas, the publishers have decided - rather than pass that cost on to buyers - printing will now take place in the second week of January. Available to pre-order soon.

Gilli Smyth - Nitrogen Dreams (book)

A marvelous illustrated compendium of most of Gilli Smyth's published (and many unpublished) works to date. Available to pre-order soon.

The Seven Drones @ Gong Uncon '06 (DVD)

Essential. Perhaps the best DVD to come out of the Amsterdam Uncon. An experimental, aural, visual, infomational and spirited adventure unlike anything else anywhere. Master practitioners of the art of glissando guitar together - daevid, Steve Hillage, Steffe, Harry Williamson, Brain Zero, Fabio Golfetti, Jerry Bewley, Steve Higgins, Makoto and Josh Pollock - will it ever happen again?

Sacred Geometry 3 (CD) listen in

Third and most welcome helping of luscious and deeply relaxing glissando guitar and synth from daevid and Mikey - each one gets better and the first one hit the spot.

Live @ the Gong Family Unconventional Gathering (DVD)

Very well filmed and recorded climax to an unforgettably joyous weekend. One that still reverberates two years further onwards… and aroundwards.
